Hey,
Ran really well considering I didn't feel too good starting out. I made the mistake of sitting around too long(getting to the start line too early) in the cold. Probably not having enough fluid in the system either. We started out and after about 4 miles my legs felt done, I contemplated dropping out(not like quitting, but at least jogging the rest of the way). BUT, I'm really happy about the outcome, with all that negative crap going on in my head/body I managed to hang on and put together a solid race. I don't even think I slowed much, even though I did have to ease up at times around the 6-8 mile points. Coming home down Memorial drive in the last 4 miles I managed to hook up with a two people(including the 3rd place chick) and this helped me to pick it up again. I finally got chicked by her as we overtook the 10k crowds. It was kinda annoying weaving through the loads of 10kers, but thinking back I think it also helped to distract me too so bitter sweet. Don't have much else to say except the stats. I carried the Garmin and got it to Auto lap each mile.

Penticton Day #5
Heya,
Long run day. I woke up that morning not feeling too bad. The sun was out too, yayyyy, although it woulda been nice to have some more of that sun for our riding uh? Oh well, so it goes. We headed out shortly after 9am. Dusty stayed behind to give us a head start, Trevor and I ran out with Dan. Off to the canal where we headed across to run on the trail on the other side of the dam. Trevor and I stuck together and got a nice pace going. Not speedy at all, but solid, just over 8min pace on gravel. I carried my nutrition in a bottle(Heed) which is a Hammer product, one of the sponsors for the camp. I planned on doing 2.5 hours, when I emailed Chuckie saying I could try for 2.5 hours he quickly corrected me saying that I wasn't just to try, but to DO THE 2.5 hours. hee hee So out I go 2.5 hours or bust. The legs were heavy, but I figured the legs may loosen up a bit as we go.
So Trev. and I headed out along the canal off to Skaha lake and back, we got there with out too much trouble, Dusty caught us easily by then and we made it to the turn in about 33 min? That got us back to the hotel in 66 min, how's that for even pacing uh? From there Trevor decided to do a dif. route and I went out after refilling and a swig of gel to do another out and back along the canal. My legs were feeling pretty good so I kept the same pace and actually ended up beating our time to lake Skaha. Just as I was running back Greg pulls in with the car for support. So I got a refil of Heed and another gulp of gel from the flask that Greg brought. Here Greg joined me for a bit, to keep me company as I was running alone(although I really don't mind) and also to test out his knee which had been giving him some grief since St. G IM. I figured I'd need a bit more than the full out and back so decided to run with Greg out a ways and return back to Skaha where his car was parked. This would tack on the right amount of time so I would almost be done when I get back to the hotel. So we did that, Greg ran with me a bit, drove off and I headed once again back to Lake Okanagan and the hotel. The legs were a bit sore by now, but still feeling good. I made sure on this long run to stay hydrated and take in enough nutrition since it was the last workout of a long hard weekend. Got back to the hotel and just needed to do a short out and back to make up the 2.5 hours. I musta picked up the pace in the second half, I just now looked at my Garmin for the first time and notice that my overall average pace was 7:59. 18.78 miles negative splitting the run. Not bad for having run after all that riding the days before. I headed directly into the lake for a ice bath after the run.
Trevor actually went out with the car to check on me since him and Greg figured I should be back by now. I was standing in the lake when I saw him drive off from the hotel. I walked back to the room, showered and checked out of the hotel. Back to Calgary I go, what an awesome camp. The rain sometimes had us worried and chilly temps at times. I also had to build up the strength from the sickness, but I ended it off really strong and with a whole new level of fitness. My legs weren't actually that tired after it. I think the previous weekend's two days of riding hurt me more. Thanks Greg for another solid camp, it was awesome! I'll be back to defend my Anarchist title, right Greg? hee hee Over and out

Penticton Day #4
I better write quick I'm falling almost a week behind here. Sunday we rode the course the correct way, minus the out and back. According to the forecast this was "supposed" to be the best day, but ended up being the worst. We had dark rain clouds approaching us as we rode out. We rode away from them heading of course through OK falls, Oliver, and then Osoyoos. We lost one person immediatly as he didn't want to ride in the rain. Who could blame him, I don't think any of us was too keen on starting out in the cold and possibly rain. I think I probably would have cancelled the ride if I didn't have cda so close. Anywho I needed this ride and was just starting to feel strong so I sucked it up as did the others.
We had a pretty good pace coming out of OK falls. Brad took off and I put my head down to chase him down. That's apparently when Greg looked up and saw us too way up the road and he gave chase so we started riding together, us three. Almost into Oliver is where I got my third flat of the weekend. This time it was a tiny piece of glass. I had to pick at it with my finger nails to finally get it out, jus barely peeking through the tire. Everyone got to pass me in that time so I got the new one in and filled up and headed into Oliver. The sun was out at this time. Had to take a detour as there was a fire to one of the buildings on Main street.
Greg came back for me and we teamed up to reel everyone in. We worked it together, not super hard, but a solid tempo and caught everyone back by the time we hit Osoyoos. Here the dark clouds were again threatening us, we made a brief stop at the Husky station and headed on. Turning away from the clouds to ride up Richter towards other rain clouds, hmmmm nice!!! I was NOT wearing enough clothes to keep warm through rain. I was soooo dreading the wet. But somehow we managed to ride through or around most of the rain. We encountered wet roads on the descent so got a bit wet, but barely any rain drops. On the rollers it was Greg, Trev, Mark, and I. Mark would bomb the descents and us lighter folk(Mark is 6'6) would catch and pass him on the ascents, and we continued this game through most of the rollers. On one of the last ones I decided to push it so I managed to gap the others. Got to the top of the hill and put my head down for some tempo stuff. I came by this guy that wasn't in our group and he decided to draft me most of the way to keromeous(spelling?). I didn't mind I was just so happy to feel strong at this point on the course. The wind hit us just as Trevor and Greg caught me just before the out and back section of the course. Here Trevor and eventually Mark decided to take it easy to the Bear fruit stand while Greg and I went back for the others. Here the wind was stronger again as we saw another set of dark clouds just over Yellow Lake Pass.
So we got everyone together again at the Bear fruit stand and started out again. This is where finally the rain got us. Not a down pour or anything, just drizzling. I didn't mind at that point as we only had about 45k to go. Greg and I dropped the rest of the guys and climbed Yellow lake almost side by side. It was fun, but hard. My stomach was a little upset though and the legs were starting to feel the earlier effort. Oh well it looked like Greg was hurting too as he wasn't talking much to me anymore so we climbed in silence for the most part. We'd test each other a bit, but niether of us wanted to let the other go. Finally near the top I managed to get a few meters on Greg. I thought he'd be the one to hurt me on this climb, but I think I managed to surprise him a bit. Later he told me he was about to call a truce just before I shifted up. hee hee I'm such a dirty player. :P He went down and made sure everyone was still with us and we all descended back into Penticton. Mark and Trevor first, then Greg, me, Curtis, and Dusty later.
The Yellow lake descent was crazy, we probably went through like 3 dif. weather systems on the way down. Rain, dry roads, then really wet roads, sunshine? Everything!!! we had to be careful!! Once in Penticton the sun was out and it felt really good to warm us as we rode along the canal back to our hotel. We had a tail wind so the sun felt so good on the back. Another day in the books, aprox 160km. Some of the guys did a quick transition run, others went to go soak in the lake to try and recover for tomorrow's long run.

Penticton Day #3
Hey all,
Well I'm back from the camp. It started out a lil rough, but ended off really well. On Saturday we drove out to Oliver and swam in the lake there. The water was a bit chilly still, but manageble. I had a bit of trouble at the start, breathing and even a bit panicy?? Weird for me, I'm usually quite comfy in the water. After the swim we got the bikes ready and rode out together to Osoyoos to start the Anarchist climb. Greg and I have been talking about this one all year and it didn't disappoint. We all started our watches at the first pitch and started up. Trev, Greg, and I started out together. Trevor bolted up front stating that he at least wanted somtime in the lead. Aughhhh I wanted to start up a bit easier and build into it, oh well I didn't want to get dropped so I picked up the pace to stay with them. We stayed on Trevor's wheel for a few minutes, I felt pretty good, not hurting yet. He pulled to the side at some point and backed off a bit so I took over the pacing. I did my best just to keep with the tempo he had set. After a bit I looked back and noticed Trevor and Greg had dropped back a bit. Was I going too hard? Should I wait/sit up? I didn't want to go too hard and end up cooking myself. So I waited a bit, but they weren't coming back up to me. So I decided to just go it alone and see if they'd catch up later. We hadn't gotten to the first corner before all of this happened. I alternated tempo for a bit, then I'd shift down to spin easier. I rarely stood, except near the top. At one corner I glanced back and saw a red/white jersey not too far behind me. Looks like Greg(it was actually Dusty) was catching up. So I really started to push hard, it was maybe 30min into the climb and I really wanted to break the 50min barrier that we'd established as the Climb record(at least for us). There were a bunch of switch backs so it was hard knowing exactly where the top was. At one point I looked at the watch at around 40min and I thought k this must be it, the last straight away. Then I turn the corner and see another one going the wrong direction. Oh oh, running out of time the record might hold. Near the top it wasn't nearly as steep and I found I could shift up quite a few gears. Two straight aways I actually got into the big gear and down on the aero bars. Finally the last straight away and I could see the eagle. I stopped the clock at 47:59, yayyyy a new record!! Thump thump thump thump, look down and see a flat. LOL just after the finish line. Dusty was next, and then Greg and Trevor together. Then there was Ted, Curtis, and Dan(I'm not sure the order here). We took some pictures and I changed my flat and then we put our arm warmers back on and descended back into Osoyoos, the descent was freezing!! There my tire was flat again so I got to change my tire again!! This time I made sure to check the tire and take the metal OUT of tire before adding the tube. ROOKIE!!! We had a head wind riding back to Oliver so we worked together for a bit then later split up before getting into town. Curtis and I went out for a hour long jog in the evening. The stomach was still not 100% and it bothered me pretty much the entire run, but we survived. Curtis had also eaten dinner earlier so he wasn't feeling great either.

EDIT: To answer Lisa's question. It's by Osoyoos, you got Richter Pass on one side, if you cross town past the lake it's the climb on the other side. Here is the mapmyride, it takes you up 2500ft I think 15.5km, but nothing over 11% I believe.

Penticton Day #2
Hey,
Well another day in the books. I gotta take this time to thank Greg for putting up with this nasty roomie. I have been nothing but a bloated, gassy, nasty, not actually too stinky(good thing or he would have put me out on the street by now). My stomach just doesn't want to fully recover, it's really frustrating. I tried to go out for a run after the ride today, but my gut just wouldn't allow it and I had to stop or poop my shorts.... I stopped and walked.
K enough about that, lets start at the beginning. Today we got up and it was a much nicer day, still a bit cold. Arm warmer cold, but it was sunnyyyyyy Yayyyyyy. My sleep wasn't quite as speedy as my stomach was killing. So we got out a bit later to allow it to warm up, but we still needed arm warmers. Today we didn't do Green Mountain as we normally do. We climbed up the back side of Yellow, the IMC course backwards. The climb was good, legs felt good, my stomach was fine. The stomach was fine for most of the ride, it only gets bad when I eat solid food. So I stuck with the infinit while riding. So up yellow lake, good climb, felt good. Coming down the other side though we had a head wind and then my legs started getting sore. I'm guessing there is some fatigue from last weekend still? At least my energy was back. Stopped at The Bear fruit stand and kept going. At the rollers is about the time my legs officially expired. Trevor was ahead and I kept him in my sites but he was still gaining till the last roller. Then I seemed to get into a groove and start climbing better. I noticed he wasn't gaining anymore and looked to be dropping back so I put my head down and gaver. We hit Richter and I really pushed hard despite the dead legs to try and catch him. It took me right till the top to catch him. But then lost him on the descent. :P.
We stopped at the Husky as per the norm. Those of you that have done the camp will know the usual routes. It's almost becoming a normal thing for Darryl to get dropped on the way back from Osoyoos. I didn't want to disappoint anyone so of course I got dropped.... yet again. It was humbling, I know I'm stronger than this, but it just wasn't happening. So I did what I could, I wasn't the only one hurting so just kept going. Got back into Penticton, most went out for a transition run. I opted to wait and try to go for a bit of a longer run. I wanted to do an hour, so I waited, got some food in me and tried to go out. But as I mentioned earlier it didn't work so I walk/ran home. Had a good dinner with Greg, chicken/pasta and we're just chillen here a bit before bed.
Tomorrow we do a open water swim and climb Anarchist. Greg and I have been trash talking each other all year about this climb. It's all in fun and honestly I don't mind if he beats me, but I do wish for one thing. If the cycling Gods can grant me one wish, that would be to at least make it interesting. I want to keep pace and not get dropped before it starts type of thing. It would be awesome to be able to push each other and really have a good ride. I'm sure Trevor will be with us, if I'm even there? I just want to be able to keep up, please please Greg don't attack me till later in the climb!! Maybe I will tamper with his bike during the night??? ;) Fill his bike frame with quick drying cement?? hee hee j/k K, over and out blogger buddies!!!

Penticton Day #1
Hey,
Day one didn't quite go as planned. But not too bad overall, could have been worse and will only get better as we go, weather and health. Yesterday we were going to leave really early so we could get a ride in, but I was just too weak early on so Greg and I both opted to sleep in and just leave when ever we felt like it. So we ended up leaving shortly after noon. This worked ok, only had one delay in LL where they were blasting rock, had to wait on the road for maybe 20-30min.
Today we finally got on the road, we waited for it to warm up a bit. Was supposed to rain and there were rain clouds to the south of us but nothing over us yet.... So we started off with a head wind on our way to osoyoos. Greg and I started pushing a bit and after few turns at the helm I realized I still don't have my full energy back yet. In fact eventually even holding his wheel was a task in itself. Aughhhh oh well, this combined with the dark clouds closing in on us and cold wind eventually we decided to turn around. I was getting chilly and we don't want to kill ourselves on the first day. I'm still improving. So we rode back, the tailwind helped that go by a lil easier.
So we rested a bit and went out later with Trevor. This time we climbed up Green mountain road. At times I tested myself a bit, but eventually my body had the last say, lol. We just rode to the top of Green Mountain road and come down the way we came. Oh we already had a run in with the local police. One cop stopped and reminded us to ride single file and in the bike lane. I didn't see any bike lane there, but single file I guess we can do. He seemed a little cranky, he pulled up beside us, honked the horn while we were sitting there waiting for the light, then rolled down the window to let us know. Oh well we just agreed and moved on, no sense in letting that ruin our day. So almost 4 hours on the bike, hopefully I'll be 100% tomorrow and ready really ride hard. Cheers,

Poop Fairy - 1, Montezuma's Revenge - 1, Darryl - 0
They both ganged up on me last night. Not sure what I did to deserve this, I'm assuming it was the steak I ate. I had a bad feeling about it, red, juicy, but the texture ....anyways I ignored my spidey sense and here I am feeling like I got run over by a truck. They hounded me all night, I kept going to the bathroom wondering who'd take the first punch, sometimes nearly at the same time??? K that's enough details, it finally subsided and I was allowed to sleep. I'm actually finally able to get some food(jugo juice smoothie from Lisa) in me. Maybe some solids later.
Damn, I'm supposed to leave for Penticton early tomorrow morning. What do I do? Do I just go knowing I'll recover, pound back some calories/fluids and trust that I'll be able to train when I get there? What ever this is that hit me took alot out of me. Maybe I should wait a day or two? Not sure, I'll pick up my bike from the shop later today and feel it out. Maybe go for a walk, see how I feel. Either way, they may have got me this time in the round robin play, but I will be back!!!

Post 300!!
Hey,
Well the weekend has come and gone. I was quite apprehensive as it's probably the biggest 2 days I've ever done. Saturday was to be a long "easy" fat burning type of ride. I put easy in quotes because any time you ride over 200km in a stretch the term easy doesn't really apply anymore does it? I managed 208km, for the most part I kept it easy. I pushed a bit at times, but not too much. Greg and Adrian joined me for the first 3 hours. Thanks guys!!
Sunday was the real test. How would I do on tired legs and a tired body. I went and swam in the morning, it took more than one attempt to get out of bed. I had to email/phone Curtis twice to reschedule the riding time. I think I have the best training partners EVER!!! If they ever get coaches themselves I'm screwed!! Anyways I finally got to the pool farmer tan an all(the life guards were laughing at me as I strolled by). Got it done and on to the bike, I was soooo tired. The plan was to do 4.5 hours and HARD!! After a few minutes on the bike I didn't actually feel that bad, physically tired, but my legs were turning the pedals! So I rode as hard as I could for the first 1:45. That's about when the wheels fell off, head wind and in the elbow falls crappy ashalt. I hate that chip seal!! Oh well I made it to the turn around and headed back. The tail wind seemed to help revive my muscles and I started to push the pace again. We only stopped once sunday and maybe 20minutes after the stop I spotted Greg on the horizon. He was determined to rip what was left of my legs completely off into oblivion!! And so he got me pushing really hard again. We rode side by side, not saying anything just pushing.
Here's where I started to worry again. You see I was to run hard off the bike too!! So I got to the car and nearly fell over as I dismounted. THe change was anything but graceful. I tried to push and my legs responded till we hit the big hill on a 1 mile loop. I was supposed to run 3 miles hard at 7min pace(don't forget I've ridden 340km in 24-36hours?), I was fine till I hit the hill and my legs said NO WAY!! So I stopped and walked for a bit, Curtis kept running. I didn't let him get too much on me before I started again. I got to the top and kept going, the pace was good actually. Managed 2 more laps, finished the 3 miles. The hill got better and better each lap, big stop on the first lap, short stop on the second, and the third I ran all the way up. The average pace was 7:04 with the walk breaks!! So ya I CAN run off the bike, I just need to do a few more come IM, but I will allow a lil slower pace. ;) A few easy days here and off to Penticton to seal the deal on this mega block of training. I hope all you tri buddies had a good weekend, couldn't have asked for better weather!!! Cheers,

Motivation for the weekend
Some quotes from the coach to help me get through the weekend. Yes it'll be hard, but it'll make race day less difficult. Or at the very least over faster....
"One goal here today: HURT. You’ll know it when you get there Darryl, so find that sweetest of spots and maintain it as long as you can, then a little longer."
"This is a HUGE weekend Darryl, but one you MUST negotiate if your goal of getting to Kona is to be realized. They don’t hand out qualifying spots to those wishing to be there; they hand them out to those who have done their homework. This is that homework. Put the ‘stud’ in study."
Nuff said,

USA!! USA!! USA!!
USA! USA! USA! That's what two dudes were yelling/chanting as I climbed at Edworthy Park yesterday. It kinda helped actually, helped take my mind off the pain in my quads and the loss of feeling in my toes. The hill is almost exactly 1km long, did the first one pretty quick in like 3:26, then the others all seemed to fall between 3:30-3:45, or somthing like that? It's a great hill if the weather is crappy, completely protected by trees from the wind. Yesterday though it didn't help much, I checked the temp right after and it was only +1. That's gotta be a record for this fella. The wind would blow through my shoes on the way down(I for some reason didn't put on the shoe covers/booties) then on the way up you're pushing so hard on the pedals that the circulation has a terrible time of warming the foot. So by the time I'd done 12 of those I couldn't feel my toes anymore, and my fingers were cold too.
Did a 40min jog again to test out my calf and I'm really happy to say I didn't feel a thing, the soreness/stiffness is completely gone. Just goes to show if you nip those slight irritations(not yet full fledge injuries) in the butt early you can get rid of them before they do become an injury. A theory of mine is that every time you test a sore spot, whether it's a foot or leg say you feel a little pain one day. Not the type of regular pain you get from a hard workout, you guys know the difference. Say you take 2 days off running then hit the road again, it's not gone in fact you run too much or too hard and re-aggrevate it(you guys know what I'm talking about I'm sure everyone's done that at some point) say that injury would have taken 3 days to heal and you ran at the 2 day mark. You re-injure it and now you got 5 days recovery time. Then you wait 3-4 days and try to run hard on it again, re-aggrevate it. Congratz you now have a full fledge injury and must take off another 7 days. It goes up exponentially and if you would have just been patient at the start and taken the 3 days off you wouldn't keep hurting it and keep adding time to your recovery. Just my opinion, that's the way it's worked for me in the past. The great thing about triathlon is that you got 2 other sports to keep you fit while you're healing, and most of the leg/foot injuries don't bother cycling AND running. And for me running is my strength especially right now so it was a no brainer, crank up the cycling and swimming and give the leg the rest. Peace out,
Oh, and PS: The reason I think they were chanting USA was because I was wearing a blue jacket with red trim. I think that's why. Seriously do I look that funny while cycling??? Someone else took my picture again in fish creek park(remember last year?).

Hit and Run
Last week after a swim I exited the Talisman centre to find my car got hit while I was working out.I was sooooo lucky there were two notes on my window from two witnesses. They both told me about the Telus Van that had crunched into my bumper then had gone to the other end of the parking lot and parked there. Crazy eh, not only a hit and run, but he decided to still get his workout in!!! I went over and checked and saw there was no damage to his vehicle. So I call the cops and wait for Mr. hitandrun. A few people walkedout and walked by me and the Van. I watched each person looking for a guilty face. I stayed a few cars over since I didn't want to block the person's exit in case he wanted to run, I don't want to become a violence casualty either. I'm no scrapper, never have been. Anyways eventually a guy walked up looking over at my car first then on to his Telus van. He had a really guilty look on his face, kinda flushed, but he tried to hide it as he walked by me to his Van. At that point I approched him and asked why he'd hit my vehicle. He totally denied it and asked me to prove it since he had no damage. I informed him that I had two eye witnesses. Then he gives me this lame excuse somthing like, "Oh well a lot of people don't like Telus, they'd do anything to get/frame me". Well I nearly burst out laughing, I didn't since I didn't want to piss him off. Seriously??? People would go through all that trouble of being a witness just because they have some beef with Telus??? I could see it if it was a annonomys note, but to come down from your apartment, walk over get the license, then offer to be a witness all to get a guy that only works for the company, he doesn't own it. That's two witnesses too!!! Anyways I let him know the cops were on their way he better stick around. So he did, he didn't want to get in trouble since I had all his info already, even the Van unit number. We waited like 90 minutes, Lisa came eventually since I was STARVING since I'd just done a double workout and had no post recovery food. So the police came and got both our stories, they took one look at my car and knew exactly how he'd hit it. He'd been turning around the front of my vehicle(approaching from the back) and caught the bumper with his wheel which is why there was no damage(on his van). Smart guys, I'm glad I called the police. So they got all the info, my statement, my witness info(I should have kept this cause now I need it for insurance) and told me I was fine. They believed my story especially with the witnesses and even issued the guy a ticket. Not exactly sure what it was for, probably for leaving the scene of an accident?? So now my car is in the shop and Lisa and I have to car pool since I don't have rental coverage. If the guy had admitted it his insurance would cover that, but since he still claims he did nothing even my deductable is still pending.
On the training front, my running has been a bit limited from the Police Half. My left calf has been giving me some pain so I've been resting it. It feels great by now though so I'll give it a 20min jog today and we'llsee where it's at. The swimming is still going pretty good, but honestly between you and me I'm kinda getting sick of swimming. I've been doing a lot of riding lately, I think 9:45 in 4 days? I'm even given the okthat I can put in extra rides here and there. My cycling is def. my limiter and I need extra miles. This weekend is my first super long ride, please oh please Mother Nature pleeeeeease give us some outdoor riding weather. Anyways I think that's pretty much it, my post wasn't so short afterall. I appoligize for the non-triathlon related story, but I thought you guys would get a kick out of it.
UPDATE: Looks like Telus has accepted fault even though this guy still says he didn't do it. It was kinda funny the way my insurance broker explained it saying somthing like "Yeah his Telus supervisor accepted responsibility even though he still says he didn't do it." So what this means is my deductable is no longer pending and I get a rental car for the rest of the time that my car is in the car hospital.
